If you’ve taken my free course on writing how to books (if not why not? Just go here – it’s free after all!) (or better still go here and buy my book on writing how to books), then you’ve heard my rant on when to use the 25 hour system. And when not to!
But I never really talk about the alternatives and why the system works (or doesn’t).
So that’s what I’m going to talk about in this little series.
There are four basic types of non-fiction books …
- fact based
- time based
- sequence based (or process based)
- collections
Over the next four days or so I’ll go into each of these in greater detail. I’ll talk about how to recognize each of them and the best technique to use for them. I’ll also explain why the 25 hour technique is (or isn’t) a good technique for them.
By the way, I did mention the video course is free
, didn’t I? (And taking the course will give you a special price on the book?
) So if you learn better by reading go here. If by video (or you want to save some money) go here.

eBooks are easier to create and less daunting than you’re likely to imagine. One of the quickest ones I’ve found to create is the ‘collection’ or using plr articles.
eBooks are a great giveaway gift idea to use on your site to start growing your list.
Look forward to your posts on your 3 other ebook creation methods including the pro & cons of the 25 hour system.
The trick with any learning content (aka information product) for your site is to choose the format that is most appropriate. Collections have two advantages in that they reuse content and they look like books (so have a moderate value in audience respect terms). They make great give aways. Unfortunately, they have a lower value compared to the argument type book. So if you are trying to create or market your expertise, then a fact organized book is more appropriate (maximum audience respect). Other forms such as webinars and videos are great give aways and can be easier to do. Like many things, your mileage will vary. So you need to know — are you faster and more comfortable with writing, video, audio or webinar. Remember though that you need to take into account the whole process (writing, video and audio all require editing. Webinars, video and audio all require practice and may require doing it over.)
As Gaida mentioned – ebooks are a great giveaway for growing a list. No need to lose to much money though therefore on the upsell, when giving away ebooks why not create an audio version so you can use for an upsell. This works well in most niches.
The key when creating any kind of learning content (eBooks are one form) is to know what you want from that content. Who is going to use it. How are they going to use it. What are you expecting out of it.
eBooks are simply one form. And eBooks (or traditional Books for that matter) can vary from very basic to reputation building. So yes, some eBooks make good give aways.
My next series of blog posts will be on how to determine what type of learning content to use. So check back next week!
I do some article writing online and always thought that I should put some of them in an e-book. Your course looks like a good place to start. Thanks

Great info. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. I use ebooks (good content) as give aways to build my list. I’ll be checking out your videos as soon as I get a chance
Thanks for the information here. I have written one ebook that was technical in nature. It was about blogging. No sooner did I finish the book than Word Press did a major update and all my graphics were out of date. I spent months working on the book.
I want to write more, maybe I will soon get inspired.
At least you finished which is more than most people do. Why not try your book once again? This time try using our system to finish quickly. In theory you could write it in a long weekend. Couple of suggestions though … first off start your book as soon as WordPress puts out a release candidate (beta). That will give you a period in which to write the book before the software goes live. Secondly try to separate the parts which are likely to change (e.g. plugins) from the parts that are reasonably static. That way revisions are more likely to affect only a small portion of the book. Next off, redo all the graphics just prior to sending for final production. Finally, if necessary do a rewrite just before sending the book out. Remember that an eBook can be published almost immediately. However, a traditional book requires a much longer lead fime. If there is anything we can do to help just pop us an email.

Good luck with you
Thanks for this valuable post. Sometimes, the greatest tips originate from the places you actually would not expect. Recently, I did not give quite much thought to posting comments on web log posts and have left feedback even less. Viewing your useful content, might inspire me to do so sometimes.
To build credibility simply be proof of your own hype and give people value over and over again. Help others to achieve what they want to, and you become credible in their eyes.
I’m sure this would be amazingly useful for people that blog every day – all of those seem like pretty good ideas for how to spend some time with your site.
